EMDR & SOMATIC EXPERIENCING
What is EMDR? EMDR is Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing. It is a research backed form of therapy used to help alleviate distress caused by trauma, depression, anxiety, and other psychological issues. In layman’s terms, distressing experiences get caught in our nervous system and continue to cause us stress even after they are over. EMDR helps you access the distressing experience, safely move it through your nervous system, and put it in the appropriate place in your long term memory. EMDR doesn’t make you forget the experience, but it helps alleviate the psychological stress caused by the event, decrease your body’s arousal to environmental and emotional triggers, and helps you formulate positive beliefs about yourself in relation to the event.

What is Somatic Experiencing? When we experience trauma the mind and body are greatly impacted. In order to survive, our nervous system often dissociates or disconnects from the body, impacting how we function. Somatic Experiencing is a gentle approach that helps clients identify and track physical sensations and experiences related to trauma. This can help to deactivate the stress that may be trapped in the body to assist clients in becoming more attuned and connected with themselves.
